What is Bulbophyllum?
  • Bulbophyllum is the largest genus in the orchid family Orchidaceae. With 2000 species.
  • The name derived from the Latin word bulbus (bulb-like) and the Greek word phyllon (leaf), referring to the pseudobulbs on top of which the leaf is growing.
  • The center of diversity is in the montane forests of Papua New Guinea and can be found in Australia, Southeast Asia, Africa Madagascar and in tropical central and South America.
  • Many species have the typical odor of rotting carcasses which attacts flies to asist in reproduction through pollination.

This is a rare miniature species that occurs in P.Malaysia and Borneo.
Bulbophyllum reticulatum (East Malaysia)
This is a lovely species that occurs in lowland limestone forest of Borneo. They are found in slightly exposed places where humidity is high and they grow in leaf litter, on rocks and sometimes on trees. The most beautiful part of this species would probabily be the leaves, reticulated with darker green veins spreading across the light green leave. The flowers are very pretty too, they may produce up to 3 flowers on a single inflorescence.

This species is found in East Malaysia but there has been a recent discovery in West Malaysia. Mature size is about 10cm tall and It produces foul smells. Mount it with some sphagnum moss on fern bark or in perlite for dryer places.
Bulbophyllum virescens
This magnificent species can be found in both East and West Malaysia. It grows in leaf litter on huge boulders along streams. There are 5-7 flowers, each 15-20cm tall, arranged in a semi-full to a full circle. The flowers come in red, greenish-yellow and Green. This huge species are usually grown in baskets of shredded fern trunk and sphagnum
