What are Orchids?

  • Orchids is the common name for the family, Orchidaceae.
  • It is the largest family of the flowering plants, and the name is derived from the genus Orchis.
  • There are 880 genera and nearly 22,000 accepted species, but the exact number is unknown since classification differs greatly in the academic world.
  • The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species) and Pleurothallis (1,000 species).

Trichoglottis celebica (Indonesia, Malaysia)
This species was described in Minahassa in Sulawesi and can also be found in Sabah. It has pendent stems of over 50cm long and often grows overhanging rivers. It occurs at elevations up to 1000m.
Trichoglottis philippinensis (Philippines, Malaysia)
A beautiful species tha occurs also in Sabah, usually climbing up tree trunks near limestone outcrops at 100m along rivers. Stems can reach a meter in length and leaves of 7cm long by 3.5cm wide. Flowers are about 4cm in diameter and Sabah forms has yellow edge around the sepals.
Trichoglottis retusa (Borneo of Malaysia & Indonesia)
A widespread species from Sabah that occurs in large bunches on dipterocarp trees at elevations up of 500m. Stems may reach 1meter with leaves ranging from 7 - 12cm long by 1.2 - 2 cm wide. Strongly lemon scented, bright yellow sepals with a white oblong lip.
Trichoglottis smithii (Borneo of Malaysia & Indonesia)
This species can be found often climbing up tree trunks in shady places of fairly open kerangas forest. It can be found up to elevations of 1300m on slopes of Mount Kinabalu. Stems can reach 2 meters with oblong-elliptic leaves usually 4 - 5 cm long by 1 - 2cm wide.

It was first collected in 1906 in rivervine forest in West Kalimantan. It can also be found in rivervine forest of Sabah. Stems may reach 2 meters and with broad elliptic leaves. Flowers are about 5cm wide.

  • Overseas customers will receive their plants bare rooted whereas locals can have their plants potted.
  • Plants will be packed with high quality sphagnum moss and sealed in bags to retail humidity when necessary.
  • Dormant tubers will be wrapped in moist sphagnum.
